After nearly two years, Henry Cavill is set to return as The Witcher for his third and final season. With Liam Hemsworth set to take up the role as Geralt of Rivia, the show’s casting director Sophie Holland teases a much shorter wait between seasons.

It was reported late last year that, after five years and three seasons, Henry Cavill would be leaving The Witcher following its third outing, which is hitting Netflix on June 29. While that announcement led many people to believe the show would likely end without his involvement, it was quickly revealed that The Hunger Games alumn Liam Hemsworth would be taking up the mantle of Geralt of Rivia for the show’s fourth season.

Despite the positive reception to The Witcher, it was unclear how long Netflix planned the show to last following the recasting of Geralt of Rivia with Liam Hemsworth. Following a number of rumors about a potential fifth season being shot not long after the show’s confirmed fourth, casting director Sophie Holland confirmed in an interview that the project will have a fifth season filmed almost immediately after season four wraps production:

“We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five,” Holland told Deadline.

This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone familiar with Netflix’s business practices, often investing wide in dozens of projects before cancelling all the others to focus on one. The move is also likely a play to maintain interest in The Witcher without the star-power of Henry Cavill by making the wait between seasons shorter. It’s currently unclear how much longer the show will last with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, but given that Netflix’s biggest show Stranger Things is ending after season 5, it’s not likely he’ll hold the role longer than Cavill.

The third season of The Witcher is currently scheduled to hit Netflix in Summer 2023. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season, with Henry Cavill being replaced by Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, best known for his work in the Hunger Games series and the Independence Day sequel.

The Witcher has cast Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia, and it sounds like he’s been on the show’s radar for longer than any of us expected…as was Marvel actor Sebastian Stan once upon a time!

It’s been a little over a week since we first learned that Henry Cavill had decided to walk away from the role of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. His last time playing the character will come in the show’s upcoming third season, with The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth set to take over as the formidable monster hunter in season 4.

The news has been met with something of a mixed reception from fans, though Redanian Intelligence has now revealed more details about what led to the Australian actor being cast.

Apparently, Hemsworth was actually a frontrunner for the role back in 2018, only to lose out to Cavill. It’s unclear how close he actually came to joining the Netflix series at the time, but the point here is that the actor is someone who has been on the radar of The Witcher’s producers for some time.

Sources tell the site that there was no extensive casting process when it came time to replace Cavill and that it’s likely producers revised old audition tapes and singled out Hemsworth. This all happened during the summer when season 3 of The Witcher was still in production.

Henry Cavill won’t be a part of The Witcher after Season 3. Liam Hemsworth is replacing him in the Netflix series.

By Shweta Keshri: The Witcher Season 4 was announced on Saturday, October 29. However, Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Geralt of Rivia for the fourth season. The actor, who is returning to DC Films’ Superman franchise, is being replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

The official Instagram handle of The Witcher shared the news. “It’s official: The Witcher is returning for Season 4, and Henry Cavill will be handing his swords to Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia after Season 3. Welcome to the Witcher family, @liamhemsworth (sic),” read the note.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Henry Cavill said in a statement.

The Witcher Season 3 is most likely to premiere on Netflix in summer 2023. There a mini prequel series titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, which features Sophia Brown, Michelle Yeoh and Laurence O’Fuarain, which will stream on the OTT platform from December 25.
